Stockholm City Library, Stockholm Sweden

Gunnar Asplund designed the Stockholm Stadsbibliotek, which was completed in 1928. Asplund expanded modern concepts of information sharing as he displayed all the books equally in a rotunda and opened the shelves for convenience of the visitor. The library derives from Thomas Jefferson’s celebration of the library as a sacred place, but fills the space with natural light.

Heike Hanada won a competition in 2007 for an expansion to the library, a glass building across the back reflecting pond.
