Milan Trade Fair Nuova Fiera, Milano Italy

Italy’s Fiera di Milano by Massimilliano Fuksas is a simple concept: glass plastic wrap over public space. In the midst, the always popular glass and steel tornado crashes through to the floor in startling events. This reminds the visitor that the atmosphere above them interacts in a dynamic verticality. This mile-long strip of canopy covers 2.1 million ft2 and provides 20,000 parking spaces. It’s a central avenue for large commercial structures, a mall. People tend to get lost in malls, but not this one. The capoy contorts according to particular instances, effecting lighting and structure, making each spot unique. The vortices were derived by Fuksas straight from storm formations, indeed the megastructure can be considered a man-made climate event. How better can one define a space while allowing individual projects indide it? And the entire task took just 27 months. I particularly like the water features, the calm ponds are treated as if they are the result of the structure.
