John Curtin School of Medical Research, Australian National University Canberra

The John Curtin School of Medical Research at Australian National University in Canberra is a startling facility for internationally renown scientific research, including that of Nobel Prize-winning Peter Doherty. Such cross-disciplinary educational facilities usually seek to maximize the number of people working together. Section cuts of various size and proportion assume porous spacial qualities with soaring window facades. This honesty of form, structure, and function is a paramount staple of such buildings. This doesn’t mean the building can’t make artistic interceptions. “Decorative” pre-cast concrete panels comment on the Vitruvian man, DNA spirals, and cellular structures. Shading considerations determine orientations and the sloped natural of the window facades.
