Richard Meier designed the Museo dell’Ara Pacis Augustae at the Piazza Augusto Imperatore in Rome, completed in 2006. It replaces Mussolini’s 1938 protective structure designed by Vittorio Ballio Morpurgo for the sacrificial altar built in the 9 B.C.
Meier’s controversial design of typical white planes and glass grids looms in the context of ancient Rome. It keeps a low travertine wall that was part of the original building. Slips of natural light and variety of texture contribute to an interesting space, if not disconnected from a fascinating city. |
