Zeche Zollverein, Essen Germany

Zeche-zollern1

Rem Koolhas with OMA redesigned the Zollverein Mining Complex into the Ruhr Museum and monument to old industrial machinery and architectural design. Completed in 2001, the complex includes museums, visitors centers, business sites, and the site of the new Zollverein school of management.

Similarly to the Seattle Gas Works Park, the old industrial park reminds visitors of the historic relationship between form and function. This plant was constructed with the 1930s ideas of Bauhaus and especially New Functionalism and contributed greatly to Europe’s economy and sense of design, the conflicts and social circumstances of the past.
