Three Townhouses, Prague

Josef Chochol (1880–1956) designed the Tres Casas Adosadas in Prague, around the hill’s edge from the downtown cathedral. Chochol was an influential Socialist Architect and founder of the Left Front association. Elements of his teacher, Modernist Otto Wagner, can be seen in his houses. The function of each part determined the form, with walls sloping into windows or sloping above windows to provide shading. These gestures are subtle, but the lack of decoration is startling in a composition that otherwise adheres to classical forms. A leftist artwork of statues adorns the frieze and intricate lacework criss-crosses the lower windows. This reflected his Cubist ideal that ornamentation should be part of the integral structure. These houses are some of Chochol’s final work before switching to Constructvisim.
