Swiss Embassy, Washington D.C.

The Switzerland Embassador Residence in Washington D.C. by Steven Holl Architects and Rüssli opened in 2006. In addition to serving as the residence of the Swiss Ambassador, it has work space for 400 working events and over 3000 guests annually.

It assumes the language of the Washington Monument, which it directly faces. While the white structural glass planks are similar to the monument, the materials are actually inspired by the Swiss Alps. Black terrazzo, bamboo floors and black concrete are reminiscent of black rock in the snowy peaks.

The cruciform plan overlaps spaces, opening up at times for enhanced views. The negative, outside spaces receive reflecting pools, herb gardens, and a reception courtyard, each relating to the functions indoors.

PVC panels and passive solar heating strategies save on energy. Politically inspired statues inhabit the grassy site around the building.
