Suntory Museum, Osaka Japan

Just adjacent to the Aquarium in Kaiyukan Minato in Osaka’s Tempozan Harbour Village is the Suntory Museum. This project by Tadao Ando displays his classic relationship between human beings, water, and architecture. Each element, gallery,3D IMAX cinema, shops, and restaurant, attain their own relationship with their context including Osaka Bay. In front of the complex, a public square descends toward the bay, with a variety of public events including stairs, ramps, an amphitheater, and other gathering spaces.

The programs and views determined each space. The hall is raised for views of the public atmosphere at the ocean. The gallery and restaurants within two concrete parallelepipeds gesture toward Osaka Bay and Kobe. The theater assumes a cone of steel and glass. The project was completed in 1994.
