John Fowler with the Metropolitan Railway designed the original Kensington railway station, between Gloucester Road and Knightsbridge in London, completed in 1868. Additional stations and buildings opened in later years.
An unassuming front leads to a typical tube station lobby with skylit public space and classical columns. The platform’s traditional Victorian style establishes an interesting atmosphere as it faces a brick arcade wall across the tracks. The Westbound tunnel was used in World War I to store art from the Victoria & Albert Museum. Design proposals are underway for a redevelopment scheme. |
