Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai

Jiang Huan Cheng of the Shanghai Modern Architectural Design Co. designed the Oriental Pearl Tower 东方明珠塔 at Lujiazui in the Pudong district of Shanghai, by the side of Huangpu River. It was completed in 1994.

Three diagonal columns run into two 50m diameter spheres. With the antenna spire that building reaches 468 m. A luxury restaurant can be found in the top sphere. The futuristic design and the tower’s prominence in the Live Earth concert shows the importance China places on broadcast media.
