Olympic Sculpture Park, Seattle Washington

Weiss/Manfredi Architects and Landscaper Charles Anderson turned this “industrial site into open and vibrant green space for art.” The AIA gave this project an Honor Award for the seamless integrated of the buildings and landscape with infrastructure and art. Completed in 2007 on a brownfield, it’s just a quick walk from Pike Place in downtown Seattle, Washington.

The park united a varied topography of street levels all the way to the waterfront. Green corridors with larger-than-life sculpture pieces slice from level to level with surprising quietness. The red motif is found in orange-cone pop art, Chicagoesque metal sculptures, and an exciting exhibit of rusted metal sheets.

The headquarters is particularly interesting. I got to walk around in it before it opened and found careful treatment of exterior metal, wide glazing, and white concrete interiors. The angled imagery gestures the visitor outside to the green nature.
