New York Times Building, New York

Why the New York Times construct a new building? Probably because they somehow leased it for well under market value, and received huge tax breaks. Anyway, right away people were climbing up the exterior rods, so unfortunately they had to go back and remove all that near the street level.

Renzo Piano Building Workshop and FXFOWLE Architects’s design is the tallest skyscraper in west midtown Manhattan at 1,046 ft and 52 floors. The meaty, warm-yellowish form adds to the skyline of Times Square. The cruxifix plan has exposed diagonal bracing with accentuated notches at the corners. Ceramic rods on three exterior facades increase in spacing as they go up, giving a guarded transparency. The building is not LEED credited, but has sustainable features, such as the sun screens, recycled building materials, natural gas power, and an emphasis on public transportation. The building opened in 2007.
