Neue Mitte, Ulm Germany

Here is the new downtown in n Ulm, Germany, Stadtmitte (new City Center), planned in 2000 and still under construction. The city’s plan for a new city center goes back to the 70’s, after World War 2’s destruction. The Zentralbibliothek, Kunsthalle, Sparkasse, and Weishaupt in these images are only part of the scheme. The old civic and religious structures interact with the new, through reflectivity and evolving language. The frenzied tension between modernity and tradition, with art gallery, shopping, parking, and plazas, looks for new perspectives while trying to cope with confused morality.
