Lyon-Satolas Airport Train Station, Lyon France

The Satolas TGV was designed by Santiago Calatrava, who is well known for organic sculptural imagary in engineered structures, usually bridges. This competition winning transportation hub between the airport and the city evokes images of a bird taking flight. The 130 m by 100m main hall displays a magnificant arrival as the space opens up before the traveler. The vaulted ceiling reflects France’s precident gothic architecture in the city. The traveler again views the frequent symmetry seen in the city as they proceed to one of the concourses on either end. Glazing fitted into the ceiling and walls with grand spines give all the granduer of a cathedral. It was completed in 1994.
