Kyoto International Manga Museum, Kyoto Japan

Here’s the Kyoto International Manga Museum in Japan, another reuse project, from an elementary school. The museum is divided into three programs: gallery, research, collection which includes a 40,000 volume “manga-wall.” Each space is carefully designed for cultural cues and the activities to take place inside. It’s a partnership of Kyoto Seika University and Kyoto city and opened in 2006.

This isn’t a trivial building, but is rather large in scale and cultural significance. The school look and feel presents an art that entertains children as well as adults. The downtown location with a vast (comparatively) pedestrian zone in front and lush courtyard make it a post in the city fabric. Manga is a powerful, distinctly Japanese media in a society that finds reconciliation of history and technological future difficult.
