ION Orchard, Singapore

Benoy designed the The Orchard Residences and ION Orchard in the shopping district of Singapore. The mall opened in July 2009, and the 218m tower was finished the following year. With 4 million monthly visitors, retail and high-end occupants defied the recession and the site enjoys robust growth.

The bright flashy exterior is at least partly to thank for the success, as it hearkens to a happier age and begins to place a modern face on Asian retail. It is an Asian version of the new Las Vegas Aria Casino. The Orchard has the same kind of exciting exuberance as the nearby Marina Bay Sands. The retailers’ merchandise is displayed and becomes part of the architecture, with organic forms tying it all together. Ten stories of retail, parking, and transportation are carefully linked in an intricate circulation system. It offers 33,000 ft2 of stores and a 5,300 ft2 cultural center.
