Frank Lloyd Wright Spire, Scottsdale Arizona

Frank Lloyd Wright’s rejected proposal for the Arizona State Capitol looks like it came straight out of the pages of the 1499 Hypnerotomachia Poliphili. Now on display at his old office at Taliesin West, his proposal showed an elevated pyramid with a massive spire on top.

This building was too radical for Wright’s time, but the city of Scottsdale ended up building the 125 foot spire from the proposal, with various other structure from Wright’s drawings at the Promenade. Also known as the Taliesin West Promenade Spire, the project was completed in 2004.
