Church of the Light, Ibaraki Osaka Japan

For the Ibaraki Kasugaoka Church, architect Tadao Ando followed the ancient Greek rule that sculpture and painting are the main tools of a building’s aesthetic. The form is only concrete, but it is sculpted in an extremely poignant way.

Strips of glazing bring light in to illuminate the structure, complimenting the light from the main windows that offer views of the site’s nature.

Planes of concrete transverse each other through these apertures, bringing complexity to a very simple but powerful similar treatment of windows and passageways, something Frank Lloyd Wright did for Unity Temple in Chicago.

Most powerful, of course is Ando’s traditional Catholic device of a symbolic window at the terminus of the main transept. In St. Peter’s it is a yellow sun, while here it is a cleverly crafted cross.
