Chassé Park, Breda Netherlands

OMA/ Rem Koolhaas designed these residences in Breda Netherlands, completed in 2000.The Chassé campus is an old military base (barracks and monastery), and the site had to be reused and renovated to make it beautiful and functional for 730 residences. The 10 story buildings were built of compact block with wood veneer and aluminum siding. Site elements include a theater, bowling, jail, and cultural center. Considered similarly to a university campus, the buildings were spaced with green park between. The new and old buildings layer upon each other to establish a urban whole. Special attention was given to circulation and green elements to give a cohesion of elements. West 8 and Inside Outside designed the courtyard and landscaping.
