Champalimaud Centre For The Unknown, Lisbon

Charles Correa Associates designed the Champalimaud Foundation Research Center near the mouth of the River Tagus in Lisbon, Portugal. The name “Center for the unknown” comes from the site’s history as a departing dock for exploration vessels into the Atlantic ocean.

A 125m long path cuts diagonally between 3 main structures: the scientific center for doctors, the exhibition hall and facilities, and the open-air amphitheater. The destination ocean of this path along with slope and arrangement are carefully considered to relate the blue sky and blue waters. Opened in 2010, the facility creates cutting-edge research in neuroscience and cancer treatment.
