Blue Planet Aquarium, Copenhagen

3XN Architects designed the Den Blå Planet Akvarium in Øresund, Copenhagen. Originally founded in 1939, the aquarium moved to a new location and a dynamic new facility in 2013. The plan follows a whirlpool shape of water tanks wrapped around visitor space. The tanks become a vast pool to celebrate the entrance. Certain legs of the whirlpool are enlarged and extended, with warm and cool zones separated and an entrance area pulled apart. The dynamic swirling motion continues inside as the visitor is pulled from space to space. The diamond-shaped aluminum cladding mimics scales on fish. Interior structure appears like the ribs of a sea animal.

This is the largest aquarium in Europe, with a large variety of species and 53 displays. The tall restaurant space affords great views of the waterfront.
