Ayuntamiento de Navalcarnero, Madrid

Miguel de Oriol designed the City Council and Municipal Library at Navalcarnero in Madrid, Spain. The design begins with the colonnades at the Plaza de Segovia Navalcarnero and forms an exoskeleton of concrete rectangles. A glass box fits inside the concrete structure, with colorful horizontal reveals. The repeated linear runs of the concrete structure continue inside with the lighting scheme and floor patterns.

The ceiling slopes up and down slowly, and windows take on different levels of transparency. The interior space continues with three basement levels, below the vast entrance steps and carefully arranged rectangles of pools, plantings, and walking paths.
