21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa Japan

The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art has no formal organization that suggests a front or back. This project gives the historical city of Kanazawa on the Japanese coast a modern energy.

Circular and block elements are linked by corridors that are sometimes dark and sometimes completely glass. The transparency continues throughout the building and at curved walls, rendering a layered scene of glazing. The visitors can circulate in a truly fluid way without any predisposition, and have an autonomous space while viewing a universal shared space. The spaces between blocks leave courtyards, which are utilized as art. Visitors can walk into a “pool” without getting wet.

This design by SANAA wascompleted in 2004.
