University of Cincinnati Recreation Center, Ohio

Thom Mayne with KZF Design and Morphosis takes their place alongside Tschumi and Peter Eisenman’s spectacular projects at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. Completed in 2006, the Student Recreation Center is an “exquisite corpse” of surrealism. An overly muscular athletics compound rams into the existing stadium. An active food court, student dormitories with soothing horizontal motions, and looming lecture halls interact like giants playing in the landscape.

Typical for Morphosis, the roof often wrinkles and folds to mix up the levels of built space as they rise vertically. This suggests circulation beyond the pedestrian level, with structural and permeable materials and adds further depth into this conversation. It’s an interchange of program and human elements just as it is a walkway for human movement and experience.
