Unification Observatory, Mt. Odusan South Korea

The Unification Observatory on Mt Oh-Du, near where the Hangang River meets the Imjin-gang River, features exhibition halls, an historical museum, and an observation deck toward North Korea. Completed in 1992, it symbolizes Korea’s discontent with it’s northern relative.

The visitor is greeted by a statue of democracy activist Cho Man-sik, who is believed to have been executed by North Korea. Inside are a 2 meter diameter Reunification Prayer Drum and resources for writing and drawing. The Mangbaedan Altar allows defectors to pray to relatives still in the north.

All this is designed as an outlet for those who seek unification of the two Koreas. Historical exhibits display that struggle in the past, and explanations of Korean society. One exhibit, for example, displayed the model Korean classroom of the north.
