Turning Torso, Malmö Sweden

Santiago Calatrava designed the HSB Turning Torso, a deconstructivist luxury condo skyscraper in Malmö, Sweden, just off the Öresund strait.

The design is based on the twisting form of the human body. Stacked sections are connected by a steel spine with diagonal structure connecting them in a very flexible form. A circular hallway sits in the concrete core, with high-priced residential units at the edges of the rectangular floor plan. It was completed in 2006.

The tower revitalizes this grimy part of the city, as the tallest residential building in Europe. Because the building turns, each residential unit has a unique view. Aluminum panels cover tapered white steel tubes to give a gleaming white appearance.
