Tribune Tower, Chicago

Howells & Hood designed the Tribune Tower in 1923, transforming Chicago into the modern Gothic setting that it is popularly considered today. It is 462 ft high with 36 floors. The design stretched the neo-Gothic feel of international designs that had preceded it in New York. Rene Paul Chambellan undertook the fine stone sculptures. Ornate carvings, gargoyles, and buttresses distinguish the design. Reliefs from important sites around the world were included in the design, including the Great Pyramid and the Great Wall of China.

The interior was recently refurbished by knocking out walls and creating a wide open space. New partitions of glass and thin materials labyrinth through the old structural members. It is a fitting take on a classic archetype.
