The Crystal, Nykredit Copenhagen

Schmidt hammer lassen designed the Krystallen extension to the Kykredit headquarters on the Kalvebod Brugge waterfront of Copenhagen. The geometric building rests gingerly at the center, and allows entrance and pedestrian circulation beneath. The glazed exterior reflects the surroundings and takes on a patterned character of the buildings around it. The shape dynamically gestures upward to the front plaza and water feature. The floorplan zig-zags around two triangular atria. The structure is moved to the exterior walls, to allow for a less constricted layout, though it appears to be quite tight fitting.

Energy consumption is as low as 70 kWh per sqm, due to the insulated triple-layer glass facade. Photovoltaic panels on the roof also contribute to a sustainable environment.
