Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Muscat Oman

Quad Design and Mohammed Saleh Makiya designed the Grand Mosque in Ghubra Oman, completed in 2001. The 416,000m2 site is elevated above the area in accordance with contemporary Islamic architecture. The minarets stand 45m tall. The woven main dome rises 50m and uses engraved stained glass in marble columns and traditional timber work. The huge chandelier by Faustig in Germany fills in this space, with Swarovski crystal and 1,122 lights. Along the outer bays hang 34 other chandeliers.

Two corridors separate three halls which each incorporate an historic Islamic culture. The domes atop these corridors are similar to the Bilad Bani Bu Ali mosque domes. The south corridor has a long screen, typical for mosques, behind which a vast library of 20,000 volumes is found. Prayer verses are inscribed on doors, walls, and ceilings. The Persian prayer carpet by Iran Carpet Company covers 4,200m2 and is composed of a single fabric.
