Seaventures Dive Resort, Mabul Malaysia

Morris Architects renovated an old oil rig into a spectacular diving hotel. Seaventures Dive Resor has only 25 small rooms and is said to be so decrepit with rust and smell that one feels like they are sleeping in an abandoned oil rig. But that just makes it part of the experience. A three days stay coast $516.

The fantastic scuba diving in the Celebes Sea attracts thousands from the world over. The transformation of an oil rig into a diving station is a creative opportunity to attract tourism. The need to move hotels out onto the ocean is especially great considering Malaysia recently declared all of nearby Sipadan island a national park. Other hotels on Mabul stand on stilts above the sea water, such as Arung Hayat Resort.
