Sanctuary of Mary Queen of Peace Church, Neviges Velbert

Gottfried Böhm designed the pilgrimage church Maria Königin des Friedens in Neviges, Germany. The brutalist cathedral, which reflects the atmosphere of Böhm’s home town Offenbach, was completed in 1973.

The sculptured concrete rises from the landscape in stark angles. Pilgrims approach the church with housing and accommodations on either side, open entrances below and solid private quarters above.

The interior is carved out with natural light streaming in from surrounding windows. There is no geometric symmetry or rhyme apparent, as even the columns take on very different proportions.
