Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Brisbane Australia

Robin Gibson designed the Queensland Performing Arts Complex (QAPC) in Brisbane, opened in 1985. It replaced an early twentieth century open-air auditorium that had burned down in 1954. The Lyric Theatre has 2,000 seats, the Concert Hall has 1,600 seats, the Playhouse proscenium has 850 seats, and the Cremorne Theatre has 200 seats. The Modernist concrete structure is typical of the seventies, with geometrically blocky concrete forms and tiny slits for windows. The opacity of the entrance lobby is surprising. Large swathes of windows connect the lobby with the exterior pedestrian plaza.

Victoria Bridge links the QAPC on the Brisbane River’s south bank to the Central District of the city. The large pipe organ in the Concert Hall was built by Johannes Klais Orgelbau in 1986.
