New Street Station Signal Box, Birmingham

Bicknell and Hamilton designed the signal box on New St. Station, completed in 1965. This example of Brutalism is fittingly used for a utilitarian purpose and shows a beauty of form fitted for that purpose. The linear texture and blocky arrangement of spaces speaks of travel and linear movement.

The New Street railway station is currently under redevelopment, called the Gateway Plus.
