The “Music Building at the IJ” is a concert hall at the head of the Oostelijke Handelskade in Amsterdam, and was designed by 3xNielsen. It opened in 2005 at a cost of € 40 million.
The scheme is similar to the Holmen Island Opera House, except this takes the artificial colored lighting further. Open glazed facades give spectacular panoramic views to the IJ river, but color-changing background lights give a different and more contemporary atmosphere in the concert hall. A front porch up against the water gives an extra connection between the inside and outside. Two different sized concert halls are adaptable for large or smaller intimate performances. |
