Tom Meyer of Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastlehe converted the ruins of Washburn “A” Mill into the Mill City Museum, on the Mississippi waterfront in Minneapolis, completed in 2003.
The city’s roots as a production powerhouse for General Mills have now given way to modern structures with more impermanent materials. The steel structure of the gutted building pokes through masonry, with soaring silos and a backdrop of glazed skyscrapers. The spacious interior is now a courtyard for events. The grand lengths that once produced America’s flour are now accessed by lifts and walkways. It still stands as a fitting reminder of a production base that has now moved overseas.
