Institute of Contemporary Art ICA, Boston Massachusetts

The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston engages the shoreline in an intense way. Diller Scofidio + Renfro’s design, which opened in 2006, has been criticized for poor circulation and casting shadow on Boston’s “only viable civic space.” The museum stands as a civic landmark yet has a controlled interior for the public to view and meditate on art.

The harbor walk defines public spaces as they undercut a cantilevered glowing box. It continues to define a theater stage and audience space, and finally the ceiling of the exterior public room. The box above exhibits artwork and provides more private research space with the peaceful ocean beyond. Walls and windows are blurred as the designer controls the visual and textural connection to art.
