HSBC Main Building, Hong Kong

The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited Building by Sir Norman Foster and Partners with Arup is located on the site of the old city hall in Hong Kong. It’s 180m and 47 stories tall. The five prefabricated steel modules could be disassembled and moved if need be. The minimalist glass envelope gestures toward Foster’s hyper-structural design. His horizontal and vertical truss structures unify the building as they carry each element. LED lighting emphasizes this at night.

The exo-structure allows daylight to penetrate deep inside. Also sustainable, sea water is used to cool the building. It’s also healthy for Feng Shui, with uninterrupted views of the ocean and guarding lion statues at the base.

It was completed surprisingly long ago, in 1985.
