Hafen City Hamburg is a new district of 157 hectares at the city’s port being developed for sustainability and urban efficiency. With more than $433 million invested at its conception in 2010, it includes leading designers such as Herzog & de Meuron and Richard Meier. The budget ballooned by millions of dollars, and eventually stalled with the economic downturn. Initial completion date was 2013, though much of the area is already inhabited.
Notable buildings include Baufeld 10, Der Spiegel headquarters and Marco Polo Tower. The Elbphilharmonie is the crowning achievement, and the modern mini-city will be complete, packed full of stunning architecture. |
