Moshe Safdie designed Habitat 67 for the Expo 87 on the Marc-Drouin Quay, Pierre Dupuy Avenue in Montreal, Quebec, Canada near the the Saint Lawrence River. This early exploration of tight modulation of private residences is similar to ancient housing complexes but uses modern concrete and vertical design methods.
The 158 prefab cubical units vary from one to four bedroom apartments, and decks with greeny compete with circulation routes for the space in between. This project inspired other housing projects such as the Copenhagen Mountain Dwellings, but the prohibitive cost and safety concerns make such a design difficult for widespread city use. Each unit cost $140,000 for a total of over $22 million.
