Grimm Zentrum Library, Humboldt University Berlin

Max Dudler Architects designed the HU Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm Zentrum Universitätsbibliothek in Berlin. The vertical slit pattern bring a grandness to Germany’s largest open access library. It was completed 12 October 2009.

The exterior is inspired by the forms of Friedrich Schinkel’s 1833 plans for a library. The Jura-marble façade features vertical windows shifting widths. The interior gallery opens these slits wide, with warm wood and vast skylights pouring sunlight. The central gallery is a classic device for public gathering and collaboration. The building contains 2 million books, and the school’s central library and media services.
