Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow Scotland

Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) designed the Glasgow School of Art in Glasgow, UK, completed in 1899/1909. Currently Steven Holl and JM are designing a new building for the college opposite the street.

The Arts and Crafts style building incorporates modern technology with traditional Scottish baronial elements, and paved the way for new structural elements to mix with traditional motivations. The hardy stuccoed walls were typical of this weather-ridden city, yet a museum skylight peers from the roof.

Ornamentation is added on important features and brings cohesion between spaces. Large North-facing windows brings ample sunlight into the work spaces.
