Ginzan Onsen Fujiya Inn, Yamagata Japan

Kengo Kuma designed this historical hot springs hotel in Honshu Island, Japan for a slick and modern atmosphere. Thirteen ancient inns nestle together in the valley, but as one enters the Ginzan they see a distinction between old and new wood structure. A new sliding glass door connects the lobby with the street. Dalle de verre blown glass panels augment the traditional interior with steel frames and lighting that carefully outline horizontal and vertical systems.

Interior spaces are divided by various semi-transparent materials. The result of the lighting, material use, and space arrangement is a dramatic experience that tells a story of the past and integration with the modern future.
