Getty Center, Los Angeles California

Untitled-1

The Getty Center in Brentwood, Los Angeles, California was designed by Richard Meier and opened in late 1997. The extensive pre-20th-century European art and American photography collection is displayed in a slowing permeable structure of white, overlooking gardens and the city of angels beyond. Meier is known for his rationalist approach for composing walls in a space filled with light.

The museum is laid out in two grids down on the naturally occurring ridge, with buildings inserted and composed for daylight and views. Galleries lie on on axis and administration space on the other. Exterior public space is strategically carved out, with fountains that generate white noise. Parking is place underground in seven stories. The overall atmosphere is reminiscent of California’s Native American culture.
