Gardiner Museum for Ceramic Art, Toronto Canada

The Gardiner Museum by KPMB Architects exhibits a private collection of Pre-Columbian pottery, European porcelain, and Italian Majolica. The stepped back layers of concrete shear walls and horizontal shades in front of sweeping windows fits the building in the Toronto surroundings. The recent renovation work won a RIBA international award for its additions of multi-purpose event space, educational studios, restaurant, retail, and curatorial spaces for community outreach programs and research activities. The vertical step-backs indicate an ascending journey through these spaces.
