Freedom Tunnel, New York City

The Amtrak train tunnel under Riverside Park in Manhattan, New York City, is the perfect spot for graffiti artists to contribute their talent for public display. Intermittent shafts of light illuminate concrete canvases for the common city dweller. Chris Pape started the freedom tunnel to give “the freedom to live unobserved, the freedom to create artwork, and freedom from rent.” But then, of course, there’s the speeding trains zipping by and Amtrak’s monetary liability…
