Cooper Square Building, Cooper Union New York

Thom Mayne of Morphosis Architecture and Gruzen Samton designed the new Cooper Building, completed in 2009. It contains classrooms, laboratory, and studio facilities. The 9 story building features a full atrium with careful connections vertically and across skybridges. Oddly-angled walls encourage all kinds of permeable connections of space through light and sound.

A semi-transparent steel screen outside is angled and cut for views and light control. Exterior drapes can be swiveled to control light, and 75% of the interior is daylit, which contributed to the building’s Silver LEED rating.
