Commerzbank Tower, Frankfurt Germany

This was the tallest building in Europe when it was completed in 1997, designed by Foster & Partners (Foster Martin)and Arup, until 2005. The just barely smaller MesseTurm is right next to the Commerzbank and visitors can go to the top of that building for great views.

It’s 300 metres and 56 stories tall. This was permitted only because of the innovative sustainable features in the design. A triangular central open atrium with winter gardens and stack air circulation allow natural air and a more healthy work environment. The atrium is divided by glass partitions all the way up. Each tier is topped by sky gardens for peaceful work breaks with great views. Foster also carefully planned great natural lighting for less energy usage and a healthier work environment. The round corners on the exterior and interior also have a positive psychological effect.

This was also the first structural steel skyscraper in Germany.
