Cloud Tower, Grafenegg Austria

The next ENTERprise – architects designed the Cloud Tower pavilion for Schloss Grafenegg near Vienna Austria. Grafenegg castle is a stunning neo-Gothic palace built by Leopold Ernst in the late 1800s. The castle and its moat descend into the gardens where this 2005 project provides open-air events.

Copper cladding and modernist concrete lift up and fold from the landscape, recontextualizing existing elements. It provides a monument between the Black Gate, ‘Grosse Senke,’ and castle. The landscape was moved to emphasize the environmental interaction with human activity. The sculpted geomety of the structure and shiny metal considers this artificial nature to emphasize man’s impact on the sun and sky.
