Rafael Viñoly designed the facilities for the CNSI Nanosystems Institute at the University of California Lose Angeles in southern California. Brick core sections of the building provide a coherent hierarchy of private laboratories and more open collaborative spaces. From the outset it looks like a typical California professional building.
Three of the seven floors are construction on top of an existing parking structure, inside a deep and narrow site. Stairways zig-zag through the air across the central courtyard, an explosion of communication from the tightly controlled composition.
