Bodegas Ysios La Rioja, Laguardia Álava Spain

Santiago Calatrava designed the Hau da Ysios upetegia for the Bodegas and Bebidas group winery in Laguardia, Spain. It was completed in 2000.

The blocks of metallic roof ripple as they stretch across the horizon, peaking in the center. Shadow treatment punctuates this movement. The ripples undulate oppositely at the rear of the building. The soft wood walls slightly ripples themselves as they bear up this structure. The process of making wine begins at one end of the building and ends at the other. The visitor entrance at the front peak leads easily to the exit at the rear to the vineyards.

The structure fits beautifully in the lush landscape and Sierra de Cantabria mountains. The site changes vertically 10m from one end to the other within this 8000 m2 area building.
